چکیده

We demonstrate that image states provide an important channel for electron transfer between an atom and a surface, especially for the excited states with comparable binding energy to that of the image states. This new channel substantially enhances the tunneling rate for, as an example, H ? on Al(111) and Cu(111), and is resonant with the (n=3) atomic level at a large separation. Such a resonance leads to charge oscillation in the scattering of H ? oo the Cu(111) surface. The prediction of these oscillations provides one way for the experimental identiication of this tunneling channel.

Auger-mediated sticking of positrons to surfaces: evidence for a single-step transition from a scattering state to a surface image potential bound state.

We present the observation of an efficient mechanism for positron sticking to surfaces termed here Auger-mediated sticking. In this process the energy associated with the positrons transition from an unbound scattering state to a bound image potential state is coupled to a valence electron which can then have sufficient energy to leave the surface. Compelling evidence for this mechanism is foun...

Resonant neutralization of H− near Cu surfaces: Effects of the surface symmetry and ion trajectory

A comparative study of the resonant charge-transfer process of H− in front of plane-model Cu surfaces of symmetries (111) and (100) is performed using a two-dimensional Crank-Nicholson wave-packet propagation approach. Very different electron evolutions near the two surfaces are related to different structures of the respective band gaps and allow for the visualization of electronic interaction...

Molecular control of photo-induced electron and energy transfer at nanocrystalline semiconductor interfaces

Some strategies toward the realization of molecular control of photo-induced charge-transfer processes at nanocrystalline semiconductor interfaces are discussed. Supramolecular compounds that efficiently absorb light, promote interfacial electron transfer, and feature additional functions such as intramolecular electron transfer when bound to semiconductor surfaces are of specific interest. Tun...

The mechanism of photohydrosilylation on silicon and porous silicon surfaces.

Visible or UV light activates H-terminated Si surfaces because of the presence of a photogenerated hole in a Si-Si back-bond. Enhancing the lifetime of this hole at the surface increases reactivity. On the basis of photodynamics and electron transfer theory, the prevalence of two mechanisms of photoactivation (internal photoemission versus interband photoexcitation followed by electron transfer...

Mediated Electron Transfer at Vertically Aligned Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Electrodes During Detection of DNA Hybridization

Vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube (VASWCNT) assemblies are generated on cysteamine and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME)-functionalized gold surfaces through amide bond formation between carboxylic groups generated at the end of acid-shortened single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and amine groups present on the gold surfaces. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging confirms the vertical ...
